Inspired by my grandmother's role as a young woman growing up in rural India, there were always chores to do. One of the most taxing was the laundry. A multi-day process, soap was made from scratch and clothes were hand-washed, then hung on lines to dry. The way the saris hung created sculptures in and of themselves, dotting the cityscape with vibrant bursts of color.<br />

Venation is the intricate vein structure present in leaves and wings of insects, especially visible when that specimen has died, losing its color. Aiming to study different pleat structures, applique, and fabric transparency, I utilized this concept of the loss of color to highlight the fabric manipulation. I experimented with the arrangement of fabrics with different properties and compositions such as cotton voile, eyelet, and silk taffeta, as well as pin tucks and smocking to create shaping and visual interest.<br />

Finishing techniques are incredibly important on garments, especially ones where these finishes are visible. As silk chiffon is very sheer, I incorporated finishing techniques into the very design, piecing squares and triangles on the bias together with french seams to make a handkerchief skirt, and finishing the bottom with a baby hem. The fabric flows as if it were made of water, skimming the body and moving with it.<br />

Laser-cut silk flowers out of the same fabric as the bodice. Strung onto thread to form a garland called a <i>gajra</i>, that decorates the hair, as is common during South Asian celebrations.

When a group of fire ants is submerged in water, they link their bodies, forming rafts that float on the surface. Air becomes trapped between the bodies, forming a hydrophobic barrier and preventing them from drowning. I drew parallels between this and chainmail, as both are composed of thousands of smaller parts, working in unison to create a protective armor for survival. 3-D printed ants are chained together, as if their bodies were individual links in chainmail.<br />

This allows the wearer to choose how they want their clothing to fit: whether to conform to silhouettes as trends go in and out, or adapt to the changing nature of people’s minds - all without having to own multiple pieces to achieve different looks. When the fabric is smocked and brought closer to the body through the pull of a thread, the garment accentuates parts of the figure. Alternatively, when the fabric is not smocked, the wearer can have a looser silhouette.
